"Three little birds, sat on my window.
And they told me I don't need to worry" - Corinne Bailey Rae
Where do I begin? Oh, I think I left off everything since Thursday afternoon. Ok then, that is where I will start...
"Summer came like cinnamon...so sweet"
Thursday evening I received a call from an old friend I had not seen in over thirty years. We are family friends. Her parents and mine have known each other since...let's just say...forever! She and her husband, (along with their daughter) now live far away on the West Coast and were here in town visiting Universities within the state; trying to decide where their only child will go to school next year.
"Maybe sometimes, we got it wrong, but it's alright
And nothing seems to change, and it all will stay the same"
They are both University Professors themselves, so they know what to look for academically. I only hope that they also know what to look for in their hearts. An only child...never been away from home before? So far away? It's their call. I only hope that they make the right decision(s).
"Don't you let those other boys fool you,
Gotta love that Afro hairdo"
We chose to meet at my parents' home. "The Boy" and I got into the car, picked two cups of blackberries along the way and then, at sunset, continued on to Mom and Dad's. After giving Mom the blackberries, (She is collecting them to make one of her fabulous cobblers) we waited...
"Maybe sometimes, we feel afraid, but it's alright
The more you stay the same, the more they seem to change.
Don't you think it's strange?"
...and then they arrived. Oh my! It was indeed great to see them. Catching up, we spoke of good times past, shared my parents' 50th anniversary video and promised to keep in touch. Their daughter is tall and beautiful with an engaging smile and interested in international studies. She will do well. The evening ended pleasantly with us exchanging email addresses and then again, more promises to visit each other in the future. Time certainly goes by quickly. It had been a long time.
"Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down"
Friday, "The Boy" had no school and the talk-a-thon continued. We picked berries and did a few other miscellaneous things. Just generally "hung out". I made up a batch of my family famous buffalo chicken wings and we attempted to view fireworks from our front steps. We do this almost every year. This year, however, although we heard them; they, for some reason were not visible. It may well have been due to the tremendous rain storm we had experienced just a few hours earlier. "The Boy" was just a little bit disappointed but not enough to get really upset. And so, Friday ended pleasantly. Hope everyone had a good holiday. Don't you just love summer? (smile)
"Oh, You're gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow"...
